Claude Cowork: The AI Feature Most Business Owners Haven't Opened

Every time you upload a file to an AI chat, you are doing part of the AI's job for it.

It is 9 p.m. And Elena is still at her laptop.

She runs a four-person interior design studio in Lisbon. Tonight's job: turn a folder of supplier invoices, three sets of site-visit photos and a string of email threads into a budget reconciliation and a client update, due at 8 a.m.

The old way: open each invoice, copy the numbers into a spreadsheet, cross-check against the quote, then rebuild the story by hand in a slide deck. Ninety minutes, on a good night.

Tonight she does something different. She opens Claude, switches to Cowork, and points it at the project folder already sitting on her desktop. Fifteen minutes later, the reconciliation is done and a client-ready summary is sitting in that same folder. She reviews it, fixes two lines, sends it. She is in bed by half past nine.

What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is a mode inside Claude, built by Anthropic, that works on your files directly instead of through a chat window. You point it at a folder on your computer. It reads what is inside, creates and edits real files there, and keeps working even after you close the app, because sessions now run in the cloud by default.

That is the whole idea in one sentence. With chat, you bring the work to Claude. With Cowork, Claude comes to where the work already lives.

Why This Is Not Chat With Extra Steps

Try the same task in a regular Claude chat and you hit friction almost immediately.

You attach one file. Then a second. Then a third. Claude writes an answer inside the chat window. If you want a spreadsheet out of it, you download it, then drag it into the right folder yourself.

Do this every day and you notice the pattern. You are not really delegating the work. You are ferrying files back and forth while the AI does the interesting twenty percent in the middle.

Claude Cowork removes the ferrying. Give it access to a folder once, and it reads what is there, writes new files there, and leaves them exactly where your team already looks for them. No upload queue. No downloads folder full of report_final_v3.xlsx.

What Changed on 7 July, and Why Everyone Is Talking About It Today

Cowork launched as a desktop-only app in January 2026. On 7 July, Anthropic expanded it to web and mobile, so a task started on a laptop can be checked from a phone and finished on any device, even with the laptop closed.

Anthropic's breakdown is specific. The two largest categories are business operations, things like reconciling a quarter's spend or turning a folder of contracts into a renewals tracker, and content creation, things like building tomorrow's client deck from call transcripts and pipeline data. Together, that is roughly half of all Cowork use. Anthropic calls it the work around the work: rarely in anyone's job description, but a large share of everyone's week.

That is also why, two weeks after the mobile launch, Cowork is still trending on X today. Creators are publishing threads explaining that Claude Code and Claude Cowork are not the same product. K-12 teachers in the US are getting a free year of Claude that includes Cowork. Other users are swapping Cowork use cases across finance, ops, content, HR and research. The confusion is real, and it is worth clearing up properly once rather than re-explaining it to your team every time someone mixes the two up.

Isn't This Just a Chatbot With a Longer Memory?

Fair question. No, and the difference matters if you are nervous about handing business files to an AI.

Cowork does not go off and finish a job silently. When it reaches a decision only you can make, approving a discount, sending an email, filing something official, it stops and asks. Nothing goes out the door until you review it. Anthropic's own framing is blunt about this: the decisions still come to you.

The second reason runs deeper, and it is the part that made Cowork click for people once they actually understood it: structure.

The Two Files That Actually Make Cowork Work

Every Cowork task starts by reading one file, if it exists: claude.md.

It is a plain text file. No code, no special format, sitting inside your Cowork folder. It tells Claude who you are, how your folder is organized, and how you want it to behave. You write it once. Claude reads it before every task from then on.

A second file, memory.md, is where Claude writes down what it learns about you over time. Tell it you like reports sorted by class period, or that invoices under fifty pounds do not need a second approval, and it remembers next week, next month, indefinitely. Both files are yours to open, read and edit whenever you like. Nothing about how your assistant behaves is hidden inside a model.

You do not have to write either file from scratch. Point Cowork at a new folder and ask it to interview you, and it builds both files by asking questions one at a time, then saves them for every task after.

How to Set This Up for Your Business This Week

1. Get a paid plan. Cowork is not on the free tier. It needs Claude Pro (around twenty dollars a month), Max (from a hundred dollars a month), Team or Enterprise.
2. Create one folder. Call it whatever you like, a Cowork hub works fine. Put it somewhere synced and backed up so it travels with you.
3. Add your real files. Invoices, contracts, past reports, whatever your business actually runs on. Organize it the way you already think about your work, not the way you think an AI wants it.
4. Let Claude interview you. Open Cowork, point it at the folder, and ask it to build a claude.md and a memory.md by asking you questions about who you are and how you work.
5. Run one real task, not a test. Something already on your plate this week. Watch where it saves the output, and review it before it goes anywhere.
6. Add a skill for the job you repeat most. A skill is a saved, step-by-step workflow for one recurring task, building the Monday client update, or chasing invoices over thirty days. Cowork loads it only when you ask for it.

Elena's claude.md says, in plain English, that she runs a four-person studio, that budgets get flagged if they run more than eight percent over quote, and that every client update goes out as a one-page PDF, never a slide deck nobody opens.

The Tuesday job that used to take ninety minutes of copying numbers between tabs now takes one sentence: reconcile this week's invoices against the Almeida project quote and draft the client update. Cowork already knows the format, the tone and the threshold, because it read the file before it started. Elena reviews, edits a line, sends.

Is Claude Cowork Safe to Use With Business Data?

Ask this before connecting anything sensitive, because the honest answer is that it depends on how you set it up.

Cowork's browser tool fetches live web pages, and security researchers have flagged that a malicious page could try to slip instructions into that content, a known category of attack called prompt injection. The practical fix is the same one good bookkeeping already teaches. Keep Cowork's folder access scoped to what the task actually needs. Keep a human reviewing anything before it ships. Do not hand it a banking password just because it asked nicely. Treat it the way you would a new, trusted hire on their first day: capable, but not yet unsupervised near anything that really matters.

A month in, two or three skills covering the jobs you do every single week, and a memory.md that has stopped asking you the same question twice.
